The Meaning of the Sand Dollar Logo

The sand dollar (Echinarachnius parma) is a type of burrowing sea urchin that symbolizes bravery, internal strength, rebirth/renewal, and transformation in Psychology. Sand dollar larvae are soft, free floating, and completely defenseless against predators. In the short-term, they are able to brave the dangerous sea environment by developing a unique form of adaptation. When the larvae sense the presence of the mucus of predatory fish, they are able to clone smaller versions of themselves. In this way they increase their numbers and their chances of survival. As the larvae grow and develop into juveniles, however, they must develop stronger, more long-term defenses for survival. Once their “arms” are formed they sink to the bottom of the ocean floor, burrow in the sand, and begin their metamorphosis, developing hard exoskeletons called tests. Now fully formed, the adult sand dollars settle into large sand dollar communities with as many as 600+ sand dollars in one square yard, providing them extra strength in numbers.

Years of healthcare experience.

At Renew we realize that it takes bravery to take that first step in obtaining help. We at Renew practice strengths-based psychotherapy, which means rather than seeing people in terms of illness and disease, we seek to build on that initial act of bravery to help them discover, cultivate, and harness inner strengths they already possess. Utilizing these strengths, we collaborate with our clients to identify and correct any imbalances or obstacles standing in the way of mental soundness and help them move toward renewal and transformation.

Transformation and renewal may begin in counseling; however, they do not end there. At Renew we believe that part of the success of one’s journey to mental wholeness has to do with being surrounded by a strong support network. We were not made to do life alone; therefore we at Renew are also committed to helping clients improve their relationships and foster healthier social and spiritual engagement.

In Christian traditions the sand dollar also symbolizes the birth, death, and resurrection of Christ. As a practice we are informed by a Christian worldview, and are happy to integrate Christian counseling interventions into therapy for those who request them. We welcome people of all religions (or no religion) and cultural backgrounds, however, with honor and respect. Treatment plans are specific and as unique as the individuals we serve.
